A word of advice, keep your opinions to yourself if you do not know the full picture behind other peoples conversation. Is your friend in Ireland? He really should see a foot pack in action and see how to handle hounds before getting his own pack. He would also neeed to be careful about buying hounds at any time and even more so at this time of year as coming to the end of the season a lot of lads will be trying to get rid of anything a bit dodgy before the summer so there will be a lot of dirt for sale.
Let me know what part of Ireland he is in and I might be able to put him in contact with a pack. If he proves his interest most packs will pass him on a pup for free and he would have no need to buy a hound. You can post now and register later. This question goes out to eddie and keiranl, the foot beagles you have or the ones you know of,what do you hunt with then,[fox rabbit or hare,do they all give tongue when hunting, and how would you rate them compared to other hounds,.
Hunt fox and give toungue and the otter hound I think are harder than the beagles that's just what I think and they run them together they have 10 beagles and 5otter hounds and they always get the foxes around me. Seen on youtube lads using otterhounds to hunt mink in the UK. Sounds like great sport by all accounts. Are they a registered pack Kieran or a pack you keep yourself. Great to see beagles kept just for their proper quarry.
Eddie running the beagles along with the otter hounds would you not have as they say 2 different hunts goin on the same fox as i would imagine the otter hounds are bigger and faster than the beagles[presuming they are foot beagles that is]I used to hunt a wee bit with a man that ran a couple of foot beagles along with his harrier type hounds and the beagles would be way behind but still giving tongue on the same fox.
The few times I've been out that has been the case but a few times the fox has back tracked and has gone strait for the beagles funny when it does happen and I like the otter hounds better as strong and faster as well. I'd love to see a picture of those Otterhounds Eddie. Even back when otter hunting was legal most packs used foxhounds. I do know there are still a few pure otterhounds around but never heard of anyone using them for fox. Beagle puppies should not be alone for more than 2 hours a day.
Beagles left alone for long periods could develop anxiety, become destructive through boredom or bark and bay excessively. You can quickly identify if the beagle is pure-bred or not by its tail. A purebred beagle will always have white color in its tail. It could be the entire tail or just a few white hairs at the tip. So if you see a beagle without any white in its tail, then the beagle is most probably a mixed-breed.
Beagles communicate through barking. While it may be necessary to stifle some excess barking, remember that beagles also bark when they are hungry or need to be let outside, etc. Being a companion dog, they want to be with you. As long as the rules are consistent, they are okay either inside or outside.
Beagles in the inch class have a shoulder height of between 13 and 15 inches and generally weigh between 20 and 25 pounds. In the inch class, Beagles have a height of 13 inches or lower and a weight range of 15 to 18 pounds.
Pocket Beagles, for the most part, are smaller versions of Beagles. Pocket Beagles display much of the same characteristics, appearance, and temperament as Beagles. Beagles know how to charm their owners with their big brown or hazel eyes. Adding to their cuteness are long hound ears that are set low on their broad heads.
Beagles have square-shaped, medium-sized muzzles and come in appealing colors of lemon, red and white, and tricolor. Beagles have a double coat that requires minimal maintenance. Regular brushing should keep up with excess hair and shedding, which peaks once a year in the spring.
Bred as hunting dogs, the Beagle is the smallest breed of hound dog originating in England. The Beagle gained their popularity in the Middle Ages for their superb ability to hunt rabbits and hare. Hunters especially liked that they could keep up with Beagles on foot as opposed to having to be on horseback with the larger hound breeds. Beagles often have their noses to the ground and are ready to give chase, often disregarding fence lines.
As a hunting dog, Beagles worked in packs. However, be aware that separation anxiety, and the negative behaviors associated with it, is common among Beagles of all sizes. Beagles make wonderful family dogs.
