The National Archives opens all records to the public 62 years after discharge. Learn how to access archived records. For a mail request, you can download the paper application here. Be sure that you mail your request to the proper location. The last page of the application has detailed instructions that will tell you which location is correct. Do not use the emergency fax number given elsewhere on this page.

Emergency Requests Funerals, Surgery, etc. The National Archives will expedite delivery of a DD under certain circumstances, usually in 1 to 5 days. They will work directly with the Archives to obtain the records necessary. Otherwise, download the paper form and state the nature of the emergency in the "Purpose" section.

PEP records document the military service of Presidents, members of Congress and the Supreme Court; famous military leaders; decorated heroes; celebrities; and other cultural figures. As part of the initial transfer of records, a selection of approximately records of Persons of Exceptional Prominence who had been deceased ten years or more were opened to the public. Additional records of eligible individuals have been added and will continue to be added as transfer agreements are reached with the respective military service departments.

A Report of Separation is generally issued when a service member performs active duty or at least 90 consecutive days of active duty training. The Report of Separation contains information normally needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment, and membership in veterans' organizations.

Response times from NPRC vary depending on the complexity of your request, the availability of the records, and our workload. We work actively to respond to each request in a timely fashion, keep in mind we receive approximately 4, - 5, requests per day.
